The storage configuration consisted of 3 Arkologic Silicon Memory Shelves, each containing 24 400GB Enterprise Flash Drives. Each shelf was connected to the SMA 8100 storage controller using dedicated 6Gbps SAS connections. A storage pool was configured on each shelf using 21 Enterprise Flash Drives, and each storage pool was configured to contain 3 filesystems. In total, there were 3 storage pools exporting 9 file systems in the configuration. Amongst the flash drives resident in the Silicon Memory Shelves, 6 drives, 2 from each shelf, were configured as high performance logging devices. These devices are overprovisioned to 25GB to maximize performance and endurance. In addition, 3 Enterprise Flash Drives, 1 from each shelf, were configured as global hot spare devices among all the pools. There were also 2 additional flash drives located in the SMA 8100 controller itself. These drives are mirrored and act as the boot device for the system.

The flash drives used by Arkologic each contain a chip-level parity protection mechanism that enables them to continue normal operation even in the event of a flash chip failure. In addition to chip-level RAID, the SMA 8100 is configured with a second level of parity protection that allows the system to survive the failure of an entire flash device within the system. The 63 enterprise flash drives in the system were configured into nine 6+1 RAID sets.

Network Configuration

Item No Network Type Number of Ports Used Notes
1 10 Gigabit Ethernet 4 Each controller has 2 Dual port 10 Gigabit Ethernet Cards using 4 ports on each and using Jumbo Frames

Network Configuration Notes

The network configuration consisted of two, dual-ported 10 gigabit ethernet network adaptors. The four network ports are aggregated using LACP (802.3ad). The MTU size is set to 9000. The load generators were each connected to the network via a single 10GbE connection.

Benchmark Network

Each load generator was connected to the Dell PowerConnect 8024F 24-port 10GbE switch via a single 10GbE port. Jumbo frames were enabled for all the connections.

Processing Elements

Item No Qty Type Description Processing Function
1 2 CPU 2.9GHz 8-core Intel(R) Xeon(TM) Processor E5-2690 NFS, ZFS, TCP/IP, RAID/Storage Drivers

Processing Element Notes

The SMA 8100 comprises a single storage controller containing two physical processors, each one equipped with 8 processing cores.

Memory

Description Size in GB Number of Instances Total GB Nonvolatile
SMA 8100 Controller Memory 256 1 256 V
Enterprise Flash Drive SLOG 25 6 150 NV
Grand Total Memory Gigabytes     406

Memory Notes

The Arkologic SMA 8100 controllers' main system memory is used as the cache for file system data and metadata, and also as general purpose memory for the UnityOS operating system. A separate log devices are used as filesystem intent logs that hold data that has not yet been committed to the main flash storage pools.

Stable Storage

All in-flight file system transactions that have not yet been committed to the main flash pool are journaled to the 6 overprovisioned 25GB flash log devices that are present within the system. All transactions that would result in file system modification are journaled, including the user data contained in write operations. All such transactions are safely journaled prior to any acknowledgments being dispatched to host systems.

System Under Test Configuration Notes

The system under test consisted of a single SMA 8100 storage controller that was equipped with 3 Arkologic Storage Memory Shelves, each shelf containing 24 400GB enterprise flash drives. Each shelf was connected to the controller using dual SAS connections connected to a dedicated, dual port SAS HBA (three HBAs total). The system was connected to a 10 gigabit ethernet switch via four 10GbE connections located on two, dual port 10GbE NIC adapters within the controller with the four network ports aggregated using LACP.

Other System Notes

All data protection and data management features of the SMA 8100 product were enabled during the test. These features include the RAID protection functionality provided within the SMA 8100's enterprise flash drives, the parity RAID protection provided by the UnityOS operating system, and end-to-end file system checksumming.
